There are several reasons why we compound prescription medications.  

• ​Many patients are allergic to preservatives or dyes, or are sensitive to standard drug strengths. 
• A medication once made is now commercially unavailable or discontinued.  

With a doctor’s prescription, our compounding pharmacists can make a medication in an alternative (lower or higher) strength, alter its form to make it easier to take, or add flavour to it to make it acceptable to any taste buds.  Alternatively, we can also prepare the medication in several options including a troche which dissolves under the tongue, a lozenge, a capsule, or a cream to be applied to the skin.  For patients who are having a difficult time swallowing a capsule, we could compound a liquid suspension instead. 

Often parents have a tough time getting their children to take their medicine because of the taste.  Our compounding pharmacists can work directly with the doctor and the child to select a flavoring agent, such as banana or tutti frutti, that is compatible with both the medication and the child’s taste preferences.

Our ultimate goal in preparing any of these customized medications is to help the doctor and patient get the maximum benefit from their medication.
