Compounding has always been part of pharmacy. It is widely used today in hospital pharmacies and in nuclear medicine. 


More recently compounding has re-emerged and has benefited from new technology and sophisticated raw materials. 


The Australian Pharmacy Board, Victorian Pharmacy Authority and Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) support compounding as a legal part of pharmacy practice. There are regulations which govern the supply of compounded medicines.


Compounded medicines must be prescribed by a licensed medical practitioner for a specific patient and made by the compounding pharmacy for that patient only. 


Compounded medicines can only be prepared in a compounding Laboratory which Follows the Professional Practice Standards for Compounding issued by the Pharmacy Board of Australia.
